Business as usual. The absence of a salary cap has caused little change in how NFL teams approach the early stages of free agency. There still has been a spending spree, highlighted by the $42 million guaranteed the Chicago Bears gave defensive end Julius Peppers on the first day he became unrestricted.

The Giants struck quickly address one of their biggest areas of need in free agency, signing Antrel Rolle to the richest contract in NFL history for a safety.
Rolle has the starting job at free safety, and Michael Johnson, Kenny Phillips and C.C. Brown are all in the mix for the strong safety job. Rolle's addition was an important step for the back half of a secondary that was a significant weakness in 2009.
That's why the Giants jumped quickly to give Rolle a five-year, $37 million deal on Friday that includes $15 million in guaranteed money.
"Antrel is a young, ascending veteran player, and he is an outstanding person who will bring leadership, versatility and more big-play ability to our secondary," general manager Jerry Reese said.

Antrel Rolle believes the Giants now have the two best safeties in the NFL. A day after signing a five-year, $37 million contract that made him the highest-paid safety in the league, Rolle said that he is looking forward to being paired in New York's secondary with fellow University of Miami product Kenny Phillips.
